This session blends practical skills with evidence-based guidance. Participants learn how to recognise when a child is becoming unwell, what to do in the moment, and how to make smart decisions about escalation — from self-care at home, through to GP, urgent care, hospital, Virtual ED, Nurse-on-Call and when to call an ambulance.

Across theory and hands-on practice, the course covers CPR, choking, asthma, anaphylaxis, fevers, burns, rashes and common childhood illnesses — without the overwhelm. The focus is practical, calm and realistic: do the basics well, act early, and use the health system intelligently.

The outcome is peace of mind. Parents leave with a structured way to think, simple first aid skills they can actually perform, and the confidence to act when it matters.

Type: Informal, supportive, non-graded.

Participants will engage in:

  1. Facilitator check-ins
Quick show-of-hands, “what would you do next?” moments, traffic-light decisions.

  2. Scenario conversations
Small-group discussions where parents explain how they’d recognise, respond and escalate.

  3. Guided practice
CPR, choking, asthma spacer, adrenaline trainer — coached, not tested.

  4. End-of-session reflection card
    Two prompts:
    • “One thing I now feel confident doing”
    • “One thing I will seek more info about”
